The Wild Cats of Iceland

—————For Immediate Release————-

The US Department of State is issuing an Orange-Level travel warning for any person or persons considering travel to the country of Iceland, particularly the national capital, Reykjavik.

Multiple credible reports have been received of human/wildlife interactions, particularly in the Reykjavik campground, where travelers may seek alternative accommodation due to the high cost of traditional lodging in the city.

Regional fauna may exhibit problematic behaviors including but not limited to the following: continued approach despite repeated verbal warnings; unsolicited entrance into dwellings, both permanent and temporary (including tents); persistent attempts to access food supplies stored in said dwellings; increasingly assertive pleas for attention; unsolicited physical contact; and napping without proper authorization.

While other species have been implicated, the the primary threat arises from Felis catus, individuals of which often escape the circumstances of their captivity. This species may appear non-threatening and even emit vocalizations designed to elicit sympathy. The public should not approach, however, no matter how “cute” the animal appears. If the animal approaches you, under no circumstances should you encourage contact by such actions as offering your hand to sniff, calling it a “sweet little thing”, or permitting it to rub against your leg. If contact is inevitable, be alert for behaviors such as purring, which may indicate the animal’s intention to remain, potentially for hours. NEVER sit down in the presence of Felis catus lest the animal interpret your lap as an invitation to exhibit its most alarming quality: the ability to sleep in such an endearing pose, you would rather lose feeling in your legs than disturb it.

Individuals compromised by Felis catus have previously required interventions up to and including military extraction.

Consular support may not be available for citizens who willfully ignore this warning.

Note: Known aliases of Felis catus include “Domestic House Cat” . Below are images of potential consequences should the recommendations herein not be diligently observed (viewer discretion is advised).
